NOTE: These tips are not only applicable for the TOK essay but also for any other written formal document. We've broken down our tips according to the type of worker you can categorise yourself as.

Group 1: the PROCRASTINATORS ⏰

Group 2: the not-sure-what-exactly-to-do (a real mouthful if you ask me 😂) ❓

Group 1:

This category of individuals would rather do something way more fun than writing a plain 1,400 word document. What I would highly suggest to these individuals is IBSpectrum's Breaking Procrastination Strategy:

  1. Count from 1 to 5

  2. By the end of 5, you should close off and disconnect from all electronics around you (or any other potential distractors)

  3. Take a pencil/pen and a book (This step is mandatory. No laptops, please!)

  4. Choose your evidences and pick at them for a while. What do you really want to talk about in this evidence? What interesting and unique points can you make from this? Make sure to keep out the TOK guide for reference as well.

Now, for the actual writing stage, I would highly suggest for the first time to just write down whatever comes first in your brain. JUST write! Don't worry about the organisation or the fluidity of your points, just write!

Group 2: the "not-sure-what-exactly-to-do"ers

For this category of individuals, it is highly recommended to ensure follow this checklist before starting to write the actual essay:

  • Read sample TOK essays

  • Understand the marking of the TOK essay

  • Understand the advantages of a particular essay style & its disadvantages

  • Look at where you could have improved (or where the writer of a certain TOK essay could have articulated their point better)

  • Try grading some sample TOK essays and look at the disparity between your grading and the official grading. Are they the same? If yes, amazing! If no, try again!
